I think it’s pretty safe to say everybody’s been to a movie that would have been infinitely better with satiric running commentary from dry-witted, knowledgeable people. Of course, this can be a point of some debate as the likability of a movie is subjective and what one person likes another may not.
MST3K (Mystery Science Theater 3000) is one of the few truly original shows ever on TV, and it put that very idea into practice and just ran with it.
I shouldn’t be much of a surprise that it was able to get away with being almost the exact opposite of normal TV fare when you realize that it was picked up by a little network called Comedy Central, which was brand-spanking-new. I highly doubt this show would have made it if it had been picked up on a more established network.
There’s a lot of debate on who was better, Joel Hodgson (the original star) or Mike Nelson (head writer and replacement when Joel left the show). I personally like both and can say that I don’t have a favorite. Their delivery and humor differed enough that each struck a different part of my funnybone.
This is one of my favorite shows of all time, so I’m going to give you the chance to check it out if you somehow managed to miss it when it was on TV (either on Comedy Central or after it moved to Sci Fi).
So without further ado, my five all-time favorite episodes of MST3K
Unfortunately there are no links to “The Cave Dwellers” or “The Brain that Wouldn’t Die”, but the site the other three videos are on has a few other episodes worth watching. Give it a try and if you like it, watch the movie. I promise, it is well worth your time.
